I have a 2006 Golf TDI. It has been taking along time to warm up in cold mornings (-25°C).?

Sometimes when I drive to work (30 minute drive) it doesn't even warm up. I am talking about the temp. gauge for the engine. I have been told it should be at 90°C and it doesn't even reach that. Has this problem happened to anyone else? Is this a thermostat problem or is it a thing with volkswagon diesel vehicles? Thanks

The VW TDI won't warm up just by leaving it idle. You need to make the engine work hard before it will throw any heat. Basically this means you need to be driving down the road. Are you doing mainly city driving? TDIs have a tendancy to cool down and thus have a harder time throwing warm heat. The colder the outside temp., the worse it is. But you may want to give the VW service dept. a call and ask them if this is something that needs to be looked at.
Reply:Well I am sure it is under warranty being a 2006.Better than speculation take it to the dealer and they will solve the problem.
Reply:before u leave for work go turn your car on like 10 min. earlier nd your car will get time to warm up,on cold mornings the car's engine takes longer to WARM up
Reply:it's true diesels take longer to warm up but it shouldn't take that long. It does sound like the thermostat is stuck open.
Reply:My dad has an '03 Golf TDI. It takes it approximately 5 miles at 65 MPH before it is finally at normal running temperature with an outside temp of about 30 degrees F.
