I'm a black woman and my hair falls out all the time. i can only wear braids b/c of shortest.Any tips to help?
u should use CAT by Redken it helps future breakouts, it's AWESOME AND it shines ur hair up too.
Reply:Hi. I dont know exactly why your hair is falling out cause you didnt give much details, but I will tell you what to do. Do you take vitamins? Most people dont. You should take a multivitamin such as One A day womens or a generic one will do, and a separate hair vitamin like GNC healthy hair skin and nails that has biotin in it for example. Theres a mega dose for the hair vitamin, but I wouldnt suggest you take it because too much of a high dose may not be good for you.
You should drink lots of water and eat more fruits and veggies. That definitely helps. All these things will give you the necessary nutrients for your hair to grow and your body tofeel good. Exercise is not bad either.
There are 3 websites you should look at:
www.growafrohairlong.com - relaxed, natural and braid hair care. Follow the crown and glory method. This is what I do. The only thing I dont follow is the products she uses. I use more natural products. And using combs and brushes. My hair is natural and I have a great conditioner/detangler that does the job so I just fingercomb (I used to use a wide tooth comb, but I was losing more hair so I stopped).
www.motowngirl.com - natural hair care. There are various things here that are all good to follow, good tips and links.
www.nappturality.com - natural hair support forum
Here's a quick regimen to follow. If your hair's really damaged, you should deep condition 1x/week until your hair gets better, then slowly switch to 2x/month to 1x/month. Dont comb or brush your hair so much. That will break off your hair too since your hair is falling out. Finger comb it. This is easier said than done, but it took me 6 months to finally let go. Follow the shampoo regimen on growafrohairlong.com.
You also need to have good products to help you maintain the moisture and luster of your hair. The products on the market have lots of chemicals in them, including black hair products. They contain chems like sodium laurel and laureth sulfate, ammonium laurel and laureth sulfate, PEG, FD%26amp;C (food coloring), parabens, and other junk like mineral oil and petroleum, which is very bad for the hair. Try putting baby oil in your hair. Try putting vaseline in your hair. Yuk! This is what they have for us black people for our hair. I use products w/more natural ingredients. Here's the list:
www.curls.biz - I currently use this. I get the quenched curls detangler, whipped cream, ecstasy hair tea deep conditioner, and curls milkshake
www.qhemetbiologics.com - their sidr butter balm is great and the tea tree/grapeseed pomade
www.honeyfig.com
www.blendedbeauty.com
www.janecartersolution.com
www.naani.com
www.kinky-curly.com
www.aubreyorganics.com
www.treasuredlocks.com
www.sizta2sizta.com
www.sistasplace.com
www.nasabb.com - they have great 100% unrefined shea butter that can moisturize your hair when dry, with or w/out oil - I sometimes use the Africas herbal best hair oil with it. I also use the black soap for my scalp when it needs a good clean. They have a free sample pack - $4.00 for shipping. But I just bought it though.
When buying products, get a good shampoo, a good conditioner, a good deep conditioner you can use for your weekly deep treatments (the one from curls I use is really thick!), a good moisturizing cream (apply moisturizing cream/custard when hair is dripping wet, dont use a towel to dry hair - squeeze some water out and apply cream while dripping wet to seal moisture in), and a good leave-in conditioner spray. You should only shampoo 1x/week only on scalp. If you need to wash your hair alot during the week from sweat and dirt, wash your hair with conditioner only. Dont shampoo every day or your hair will be really dry.
Dont use a lot of heat appliances in your hair, if possible, rarely. I only use a flat iron MAYBE up to 4x/yr. Dont use lots of products in your hair. You dont want buildup to occur. When you find a product that works for you, stick with it - dont become a product junkie.
Lastly, maybe you should lay off the braids for a while until your hair is stronger. There's tons of that info on growafrohairlong.com under braid extensions regimen. Hope this helps you. And dont think about hair growth. It will grow before you know it. God bless.
Reply:I would fully recommend using dr miracles product (www.tashasbeauty.co.nz) my hair was dry damaged and falling out because of bad relaxing and colouring habits. I cut it real short and started to use Dr Miracles and within 9 months it had grown and was healthy, shiny and not so dry I have to oil it every 3 days! Word of caution on the braids, it they are too small and you keep them in for 3 months then you hair will most likely continue to break, you need to let it breathe in between braiding styles, you need to look after it whilst it is braided. I would suggest stop braiding it for while, maybe wear a wig? let it heal, sounds like it is very weak and the braiding won't be helping much
Reply:I know what you are going through...I found this web forum where african american women talk about their hair and what's best for it. They talk about natural remedies you can do to what kind of shampoo is good for out hair. http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/
Hope this was helpful :)
Reply:Hi sweetie...you know what I truly believe in...using products geared toward your hair type...you mentioned being a black woman, use things geared toward your ethnicity...
...what kind of hair do you have?...don't use something for thick and dry hair if you have thin, oily hair...you know what I mean use what is intended for you!...
...do a deep conditioning...I use Queen Helen's Cholesterol...(the one for severely damaged hair) because it leaves the hair moisturized...and since I have dry hair I need that...breaking hair needs moisture as well...ask a professional salon if you can have a consultation or just make an appointment to have your hair washed, and deep conditioned so you can ask as many questions you need to and actually see what they do...get it trimmed too...it's not hard to get healthy hair but it does take work and time the damage didn't happen over night so it won't go away over night...
...and with braids they can cause breakage too along the hair line and edges...because they are pulled pretty bad...it can break off your sides and just about all over where ever the braid is too tight the hair can just break right off...
If you get braids get something that will last long...and deep condition before getting them in and it's OK for it to be short because as it grows out you can learn how to manage it better if there is not so much of it that it overwhelms you...just be persistent!
