Drive time between JFK and Washington D.C. How much can I anticipate in toll charges?

I need to drive from JFK to Washington D.C. overnight, what is the best route and how much can I expect to pay in tolls?

Drive time between JFK and Washington D.C. How much can I anticipate in toll charges?
Best way is to take the Belt Parkway from JFK westbound to the Verrazano Bridge. Cross the Verrazano and continue on the Staten Island Expressway west, following the signs to the Outerbridge. Cross over the Outerbridge and follow the signs to the NJ turnpike. Take NJ turnpike alllll the way south. At the end of the Turnpike, you reach the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Crossing over that drops you off right on 95. 95 South all the way through Delaware and Maryland to reach DC. I can get you to your final destination from 95 if you tell me what you want to reach, since there a few ways to get off 95 to get to different parts of DC.

As for tolls: at least $20...if not more. The three bridges are around $4 apiece, there is a toll for the turnpike, one at the very beginning of maryland after your leave delaware for about $3 and the Fort McHenry tunnel in Baltimore for about $3. I'd bring at least $30 just in case. Never calculated it myself, since I use EZ pass (which I highly recommend to you)
Reply:Here's how I usually go and I can make it in 3.5 hours if conditions are just right. Take the Belt Parkway to....

The Verrazano Bridge is $9 (ouch).

The Goethals Bridge is free westbound.

NJ Turnpike is $4.25.

Delaware Memorial Bridge is $3.

I-95 Delaware is $3. I-95 Maryland is free southbound.

Note, you can take Exit 7A, I-195 West which becomes I-295 and ultimately I-95 South which goes through the heart of downtown Philly. Plus, I prefer to take I-495 around Wilmington. You can bypass the Turnpike and the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The toll between Exits 13 and Exit 7A is $2.15 for a savings of $2.10. The overall savings is $5.10.

Ft. McHenry Tunnel is $2 but you can avoid this toll by taking I-695 West and bypass the tunnel. Look for Exit 11 South to get back on I-95 South.

Total is $21.25 ($14.15 if you take the 2 bypasses mentioned above). If you have EZ-Pass - you may save $5.
Reply:The directions above are spot-on and the best way to go; however the tolls are closer to $40 if not more. If I remember correctly, it's about $6 just to cross the Verrazano Narrows Bridge!

If you can get an EZPass online before your trip, do it! It takes about a week for them to mail it to you. You will spend a lot less time at the toll booths and there are a couple stretches of road where you stop every few miles to pay a toll.
Reply:The tolls run around $30 ... it will be slightly different returning to JFK because some bridges charge in one direction only.

Those recommending EZ pass are right in some respects ... it is cheaper (slightly) and much easier. But, if this is a one time trip, it might not be worth the trouble. Most states charge for the privilege of giving you an EZ pass. Maryland does not. or at least did not when I got mine,
