Was trying to figure out who was the "best" at every position of the Hall of Fame players.
Only position where I could clearly pick someone was Honus Wagner at short and Rogers Hornsby at 3rd.
OF- I figure Ruth, Cobb , and Williams
1b- Gehrig ( would pick Musial, but played 1/2 in the OF)
3b was a little tricky, but I think George Brett was most complete of all time
But Catcher I cant decide.
Berra, Fisk, Carter, Bench, Campanella, Mickey Cochrane
Who would you pick?? Im leaning Berra
Greatest C of all time.?
Bill Dickey( 7 World Series championships, batter over .300 10 times, .362 is highest single season avg. by a catcher), or Campanella. How much better would Campy have been if not for the car accident? Bench would be third.
Reply:I think its Johnny Bench. Great Player and one of the top contributors of the "Big Red Machine".
Reply:Yogi Berra.
Reply:George W. Bush. I hear he catches pretty well if you know what I mean.
Reply:I would say Johnnie Bench for all around. Berra would be my 2nd choice. But playing on a loaded Yankee team helped him. Think Bench would of been great no matter what team he was on whereas think Berra may not have fared that well on a poor team.
No Aaron, Mays nor Roberto Clemente? Mays and Clemente both 5 tool players. Rated the top two arms in OF of all time. Speed, power, average and defense. Aaron's numbers are just incredible. Hard to knock out Ruth or Cobb. But Ted Williams falls behind the foremention three.
Reply:Josh Gibson..........
Reply:First of all why don't you have willie mays in outfield. Then to answer your question I would pick Johnny Bench. He is definitely the best catcher of all time. Look at these honors he had:
All-Star in 1968-77, 80, 83
Led League in hr 70, 72
Led League in rbi 70, 72, 74
Most Valuable Player Award in 1970, 72
Gold Glove in 1968-77
Hall Of Fame in 1989
Plus he played for THE BIG RED MACHINE!
Reply:Offensively Mike Piazza
Defensively Pudge
I don't think George Brett was the most complete 3rd baseman I think you missed the boat on that one. Go with the guy with 16 gold gloves Brooks Robinson he was the most complete third baseman. George Brett never won a gold glove how can you say he's the most complete 3b?
But if you're looking to see who's the best in the hall of fame for catchers then it would be Johnny Bench.
For the outfield
LF Rickey Henderson
CF Willie Mayes
RF Roberto Clemente
1b. Harmen Killebrew
2b. Roberto Alomar
SS. Cal Ripken JR
For the idiot who says Bench and Berra are 1 and 2 you don't know anything and that you're tired of hearing people suggest Piazza and Pudge over him. Let's just think about it Piazza has 420 homeruns for his career while playing less games at catcher then Bench did and still has more homeruns keep in mind Bench also played in the outfield as well as third. Let's see Pudge 12 gold gloves in his career has a gun for an arm. Best defensive cather of call time.
Reply:Gotta go with Yogi Berra. The guy's got more rings than Tiffany's.
One more thing: don't forget Babe Ruth in the OF. You'd have to be a punk not to have the Bambino on any "greatest" team.
Have a nice day. . . .
Reply:how you going to say that hornsby is the greatest 2nd baseman of all-time when it's obvious it has to be joe morgan, but as far as catchers go it's either johnny bench or yogi berra
Reply:Its easily Johnny Bench. One of the few catchers to combine a great bat with a great glove. Berra and Fisk were good too, but didn't have the defensive skills of Bench.
Reply:RIck dempsey maybe not statistic wise but he did win WS Mvp and also must amusing catcher of alltime he was always making jokes like playing in the puddles during a rain delay and baltimore still loves him.
Reply:Yogi is your man. Yogi can call a no hitter and play the outfield as well as catcher.
Reply:Bench for catcher...
Reply:This would be my Hall of Fame 1st team: (* = guys you missed)
C: Johnny Bench
1B: Lou Gehrig
2B: Jackie Robinson*
3B: Mike Schmidt*
SS: Honus Wagner
LF: Ted Williams
CF: Willie Mays*
RF: Babe Ruth
And here's my 2nd team (some just missed the 1st team):
C: Yogi Berra
1B: Jimmie Foxx
2B: Rogers Hornsby
3B: George Brett
SS: Ernie Banks
LF: Stan Musial
CF: Ty Cobb / Mickey Mantle (can't decide)
RF: Hank Aaron / Roberto Clemente (can't decide again)
I hope this helps!
Reply:Fisk...better fielder in my opinion...better gun from the hole too...robbed many a base steal attempt...I saw him throw out Rickey Henderson twice one game in Oakland back in '81...unreal. Only catcher in history to record an unassisted double play also. Unfortunately with the White Sox, though....
Reply:You know, I am sick of these retards putting pudge and piazza along the lines of BERRA AND BENCH? COME ON! Anyway, yes those are my #1 and #2 picks. Take care, ~N
Reply:Ivan Rodriguez is probably the best catcher ever. Mike Matheny is considered the greatest defensive catcher ever. I noticed all your picks were white guys, what's that about? No Willie Mays? No Roberto Alomar? Are all your pitchers white guys too? Don't give me that crap saying you can't pick ***** League guys because you didn't see them play, I doubt you saw Ruth or Cobb play. Anyways, both Mays and Frank Robinson were better than Williams. And no Jackie Robinson? What a joke. Call it your all time white team.
