My apartment A/C unit (inside of apartment) makes a loud boom/ thump every time it goes on or off. Solutions?

Can you help me with this? The air conditioner wakes me up every time it goes on or off. What is the source of the problem so I can describe it to maintenance? Is it just too old? I've never had an air conditioner wake me up. I'm not sure if it's broke. It's just pretty noisy.

If it is a ducted system the problem sounds like "oil canning"


The duct walls flex w/ changes in air pressure which causes the "boom"


If ducts are accessible , scoring the the noisy duct section w/ an X should work.


If that is not possible %26amp; there is some access, stuffing insulation hard against the noisy section will help dampen noise.

Reply:Check your return air filter for proper fit and/or dirt. Sounds as if the filter is jumping around.
