501-C Since it take a long time to get the 501-C can you start raising money immediately?

We want to start raising funds for a memorial but have heard it takes a long time to get approval for a non-profit. Is it OK to start soliciting and receiving funds before it is approved? Do you need to wait for the approval before opening any bank account?

I'm a co-founder for a non profit organization called SOFTIN. You can not solitic that your a non profit until you get the 501c3 status from the IRS. However, there are ways you can obtain funding while you wait.


What we did, and it's become a major funding source for other non-profit organizations.
